documenta 16: Was heute schon feststeht

Vor unserer Haustür geht seit über dreißig Jahren ein Mann in den Himmel. Fünfundzwanzig Meter hoch, schräg in die Luft, ohne anzukommen. Die Kasseler gehen morgens darunter hindurch zur Arbeit und schauen längst nicht mehr hoch.

Jonathan Borofskys Man walking to the sky steht seit 1992 auf dem Bahnhofsvorplatz – damals war er ein Werk der documenta 9, heute ist er einfach das Ding, an dem man sich verabredet. So geht Kassel mit der documenta um: Was alle fünf Jahre als Weltereignis anreist, bleibt hier stehen und wird Alltag. Beuys‘ 7000 Eichen wachsen inzwischen durch die halbe Stadt. Und der Bahnhof, an dem unser Haus liegt, war bei der documenta 10, 11, 13 und 14 selbst Ausstellungsort.

Im Sommer 2027 ist es wieder so weit. Und weil uns seit Monaten Gäste danach fragen, haben wir zusammengetragen, was zur documenta 16 heute wirklich feststeht – und was eben noch nicht. Denn davon kursiert gerade eine ganze Menge.

Die Frau, die nach Kassel gezogen ist

Die künstlerische Leitung hat Naomi Beckwith. Sie kam im Dezember 2024 als Vizedirektorin und Chefkuratorin des Guggenheim Museums in New York – und ist mittlerweile tatsächlich nach Kassel gezogen, was für eine documenta-Leitung keine Selbstverständlichkeit ist. Ihr Satz über die Ausstellung ist einer, den wir hier gern hören: Die documenta gehöre der ganzen Welt und gleichermaßen Kassel.

Beckwith arbeitet mit einem vierköpfigen Team – Carla Acevedo-Yates, Romi Crawford, Mayra A. Rodríguez Castro und Xiaoyu Weng. Es ist das erste rein weibliche Leitungsteam in der Geschichte der documenta. Im März 2025 stellte sie ihr Konzept in der documenta-Halle vor; der Andrang war so groß, dass man kurzfristig umziehen musste. Rund siebenhundert Menschen kamen. Sie sprach davon, Brücken bauen zu wollen statt zu provozieren, und davon, was geschieht, wenn globaler Norden und globaler Süden aufeinandertreffen. Unterschiedliche Identitäten, sagte sie, seien eine Stärke und kein Grund zur Spaltung.

Was noch niemand weiß

Und jetzt der ehrliche Teil, den Sie in vielen Reiseartikeln nicht finden: Die Künstlerliste gibt es noch nicht. Die Ausstellungsorte sind nicht verkündet. Einen Titel für die Ausgabe gibt es nicht, Ticketpreise auch nicht. Wer Ihnen heute erzählt, wo genau 2027 was zu sehen sein wird, hat es sich ausgedacht.

Warum ausgerechnet hier

Die erste documenta war 1955 eine Trotzhandlung. Arnold Bode, Kasseler Maler und Professor, hängte moderne Kunst in ein ausgebranntes Museum, in eine Stadt, die zu großen Teilen in Trümmern lag – jene Kunst, die die Nationalsozialisten als „entartet“ aus den Museen geworfen hatten. Gedacht war es als einmalige Begleitung zur Bundesgartenschau. Es kamen 130.000 Menschen.

Daraus wurde das, was man hier das Museum der hundert Tage nennt. Und Kassel, eine Stadt, die sonst niemand auf der Landkarte suchen würde, wurde für jeweils einen Sommer zum Mittelpunkt der Kunstwelt. Man muss die documenta nicht mögen, um das bemerkenswert zu finden.

Wenn Sie 2027 kommen, kommen Sie also nicht nur zu einer Ausstellung. Sie kommen in eine Stadt, die sich in siebzig Jahren daran gewöhnt hat, alle fünf Jahre die Welt zu Gast zu haben – und die dazwischen ziemlich entspannt bleibt.

Right outside our door, a man has been walking into the sky for more than thirty years. Twenty-five metres up, at an angle, never arriving. People in Kassel walk underneath him on their way to work and stopped looking up long ago.

Jonathan Borofsky’s Man walking to the sky has stood on the station forecourt since 1992 – back then a work of documenta 9, today simply the thing people meet at. That is how Kassel handles the documenta: what arrives every five years as a world event stays behind and becomes everyday life. Beuys’s 7,000 oaks are now growing across half the city. And the station our house sits beside was itself an exhibition venue for documenta 10, 11, 13 and 14.

In summer 2027 it happens again. Because guests have been asking us for months, we have gathered what is genuinely confirmed about documenta 16 – and what is not. There is a good deal of speculation going around.

The woman who moved to Kassel

The artistic director is Naomi Beckwith, who arrived in December 2024 from the Guggenheim Museum in New York, where she was deputy director and chief curator. She has since actually moved to Kassel – not a given for a documenta director. Her line about the exhibition is one we like hearing here: the documenta belongs to the whole world and equally to Kassel.

Beckwith works with a team of four – Carla Acevedo-Yates, Romi Crawford, Mayra A. Rodríguez Castro and Xiaoyu Weng. It is the first all-female leadership team in documenta history. In March 2025 she presented her concept at the documenta Halle; demand was so high the venue had to be changed at short notice, and around seven hundred people came. She spoke of building bridges rather than provoking, and of what happens when the global North and the global South meet. Different identities, she said, are a strength and not grounds for division.

What nobody knows yet

Now the honest part, which you will not find in many travel articles: there is no artist list yet. The venues have not been announced. There is no title for this edition and no ticket prices. Anyone telling you today exactly what will be shown where in 2027 has made it up.

This is not a shortcoming but the normal rhythm of a documenta – the big announcements traditionally come in the year before the opening. We will update this article as soon as anything is confirmed. For certainty, check documenta.de directly.

Why here, of all places

The first documenta in 1955 was an act of defiance. Arnold Bode, a painter and professor from Kassel, hung modern art in a burnt-out museum, in a city largely still in ruins – the very art the National Socialists had thrown out of museums as „degenerate“. It was meant as a one-off companion to the federal garden show. 130,000 people came.

Out of that grew what people here call the museum of one hundred days. And Kassel, a city few would otherwise look for on a map, became the centre of the art world for one summer at a time. You do not have to love the documenta to find that remarkable.

So if you come in 2027, you are not simply coming to an exhibition. You are coming to a city that has spent seventy years getting used to hosting the world every five years – and that stays rather relaxed in between.
