Anreise nach Kassel: So kommen Sie 2027 zur documenta 16

Der ICE hält in Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe. Koffer raus, Blick auf die Tramhaltestelle – und schon ist man mittendrin.

2027 kommt die documenta 16 nach Kassel, vom 12. Juni bis zum 19. September. Wer dann anreist, kommt selten mit dem eigenen Auto direkt vors Museum. Die meisten kommen mit der Bahn. Und genau dabei stolpern viele über eine Kleinigkeit, die man vorher wissen sollte. Das gilt für Kunstreisende genauso wie für alle, die sonst geschäftlich oder für ein Wochenende in die Stadt kommen.

Zwei Bahnhöfe, ein Name

Kassel hat zwei Bahnhöfe, und beide klingen ähnlich. Das verwirrt beim ersten Mal fast jeden. Bis 1991 war der Hauptbahnhof der zentrale Bahnhof der Stadt. Dann zog der Fernverkehr um, in den neu gebauten Bahnhof Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe. ICE aus Frankfurt brauchen dorthin heute rund anderthalb Stunden, aus Berlin knapp drei. Der Name Wilhelmshöhe kommt vom Bergpark gleich nebenan, mit dem Herkules und den Wasserspielen, seit 2013 UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe. Ein schöner Ausflug – aber das ist ein Programmpunkt für später, nicht Teil der Anreise.

Der alte Hauptbahnhof blieb, nur ohne Fernzüge. Aus dem Gebäude wurde der Kulturbahnhof: die Caricatura-Galerie in der ehemaligen Kleiderkammer, das Café Gleis 1 im früheren Gepäckraum, dazu der Ausstellungsraum Stellwerk. Mitten in diesem Ensemble liegt unser Haus. Wer am Fernbahnhof ankommt, steigt einfach um: Tram Richtung Innenstadt nehmen, an der Haltestelle Hauptbahnhof aussteigen. Von dort sind es zwei Minuten zu Fuß bis zu unserer Tür in der Werner-Hilpert-Straße 24. Kein Taxi nötig, kein Gepäck über Kopfsteinpflaster schleppen. Trotz der zentralen Lage ist es an unserer Straße ruhig, abends genauso wie morgens vor dem ersten Zug. Reisende, die 2027 zur documenta kommen, und Geschäftsleute mit Termin am Vormittag kennen den Weg nach dem ersten Mal auswendig.

Der Parkplatz ist schon gebucht

Wer mit dem Auto kommt, hat eine andere Sorge: einen Parkplatz in der Innenstadt finden, ohne Ortskenntnis. Die spart sich, wer bei uns bucht. Unser Parkhaus gehört zum Haus, direkt am Hotel. Im documenta16-Angebot ist der Platz schon im Preis mit dabei. Keine Parkscheibe, keine Parkuhr, kein zweiter Weg zurück zum Auto, weil das Ticket abgelaufen ist. Sie fahren vor, stellen den Wagen ab, checken ein. Der Rest der Anreise ist damit erledigt, bevor der erste Kaffee im Zimmer steht. Für Geschäftsreisende mit engem Programm zählt genau das: ein Termin weniger, um den man sich kümmern muss. Für Kunstreisende, die den ganzen Tag zwischen Ausstellungsorten unterwegs sind, zählt es genauso: das Auto steht, bis man es wieder braucht. Und wer Unterlagen, Muster oder einen Koffer für mehrere Tage dabei hat, trägt sie nur einmal: vom Wagen direkt an die Rezeption.

Warum 2027 früher geplant sein will

documenta 16 läuft hundert Tage am Stück, vom 12. Juni bis zum 19. September 2027. Das klingt nach viel Zeit für einen Besuch. Für die Ausstellung stimmt das auch. Für ein Zimmer in Bahnhofsnähe nicht zwangsläufig. Kassel füllt sich während der documenta mit Gästen aus aller Welt, und unser Haus liegt näher an der Innenstadt als die meisten Hotels am Stadtrand. Dazu kommen die Geschäftstermine, die unabhängig von der Ausstellung das ganze Jahr über in der Stadt stattfinden. Zwei Ströme treffen sich also im selben Sommer auf dieselben Betten.

Wer die Anreise für 2027 jetzt plant, hat noch die Auswahl an Terminen und Zimmern. Später wird die Auswahl kleiner, nicht größer. Bis zum 30. documenta 16 comes to Kassel in 2027, from June 12 to September 19. Most visitors won’t drive straight to the museum. They’ll come by train. And that’s where a small detail trips people up. It matters for art travelers. It matters just as much for anyone here on business or for a weekend.

Two stations, one name

Kassel has two stations. Both carry similar names. That confuses almost everyone the first time. Until 1991, the Hauptbahnhof was the city’s main station. Then long-distance trains moved to a new one: Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe. Today an ICE from Frankfurt takes about ninety minutes. From Berlin, just under three hours. The name Wilhelmshöhe comes from the hillside park next door, home to the Hercules monument and the water displays. It’s been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2013. Worth a visit, but that’s a plan for later. It’s not part of your arrival.

The old Hauptbahnhof stayed open, just without the long-distance trains. The building became the Kulturbahnhof. The Caricatura gallery moved into the old clothing depot. The Café Gleis 1 took over the former baggage room. There’s also an exhibition space called Stellwerk. Our hotel sits right in the middle of it. If you arrive at the main train station, the switch is simple. Take the tram toward the city center. Get off at Hauptbahnhof. From there it’s a two-minute walk to our door at Werner-Hilpert-Straße 24. No taxi needed. No suitcase dragged over cobblestones. Despite the central spot, our street stays quiet. Quiet in the evening, quiet before the first train in the morning. Visitors coming for documenta in 2027, and business travelers with a morning meeting, learn the route after one try.

The parking space is already booked

Drivers face a different worry. Finding a parking spot downtown, without knowing the city. Book with us, and that worry disappears. Our garage belongs to the hotel. It sits right at the building.
