Die documenta zwischen den Ausgaben: was bleibt

Ein Dienstagvormittag im September, kein Ausstellungsjahr, keine Schlangen. Vor dem Fridericianum steht ein Mann mit Kaffeebecher und schaut hoch zu den Eichen, die hier seit über vierzig Jahren wachsen.

Kassel ohne documenta ist trotzdem Kassel mit documenta. Nur ruhiger.

Museen, die nicht auf ein Ausstellungsjahr warten

Das Fridericianum wurde 1779 eröffnet, als eines der ersten öffentlichen Kunstmuseen in Europa. Zwischenzeitlich diente es sogar als Parlamentsgebäude. Seit 1955 wird es alle fünf Jahre zum Zentrum der documenta. Dazwischen bleibt es geöffnet: seit 1988 arbeitet es als Kunsthalle und zeigt zeitgenössische Kunst, auch in den Jahren ohne große Schau. Damit ist das Fridericianum deutlich älter als die documenta, die es erst 1955 zum ersten Mal bespielte.

Wenige Gehminuten weiter, an der Schönen Aussicht mit Blick auf die Karlsaue, liegt die Neue Galerie. Das Haus wurde 1976 als gemeinsamer Standort der städtischen und der hessischen Sammlung neu eröffnet. Seit 2019 zeigt sie dort dauerhaft die Ausstellung about: documenta, einen Rundgang durch alle bisherigen Ausgaben. Zu sehen sind Arbeiten unter anderem von Gerhard Richter, Miriam Cahn, Mario Merz, Doris Salcedo und Ai Weiwei. Noch genauer wird es im documenta-Archiv im Kulturbahnhof. Arnold Bode gründete es 1961. Seither sammelt es Texte, Fotografien und Dokumente zu jeder einzelnen Ausgabe. Dazu gehört eine Spezialbibliothek zur klassischen Moderne und zur Gegenwartskunst. Für Recherchen ist das Archiv öffentlich zugänglich.

Ein Wald und ein Mann, die geblieben sind

Am 16. März 1982 pflanzte Joseph Beuys vor dem Portal des Fridericianums die erste seiner 7000 Eichen. Jeder Baum bekam eine Basaltstele daneben gestellt. Fünf Jahre dauerte die Pflanzung, bis 1987. Die letzte Eiche wurde posthum gesetzt, direkt neben die erste auf dem Friedrichsplatz. Aus einem Kunstprojekt, das zunächst Widerstand auslöste, wurde ein Wald, der heute einfach zur Stadt gehört. Die Eichen stehen über ganz Kassel verteilt, ihre Basaltstelen sind inzwischen ein stilles Wiedererkennungszeichen der Stadt.

Ähnlich lief es mit dem Himmelsstürmer. Jonathan Borofsky schuf die Figur 1992 für die documenta IX. Ein 25 Meter langes Stahlrohr, im Winkel von 63 Grad aufgestellt. Oben ein Mann in violettem T-Shirt, der dem Himmel entgegengeht. Nach der Ausstellung wollte Kassel die Figur nicht mehr hergeben. Mit Spenden aus der Bürgerschaft wurde sie gekauft. Countdown zur documenta 16

Die künstlerische Leitung der documenta 16 hat Naomi Beckwith übernommen. Die Ausstellung läuft vom 12. Juni bis zum 19. September 2027, gut hundert Tage lang. Von heute aus sind das noch rund acht Monate. Welche Künstlerinnen und Künstler zu sehen sein werden, ist noch nicht bekannt. Die Spielorte auch nicht. Beckwith arbeitet mit einem Kernteam aus vier weiteren Kuratorinnen, auch das ist bislang die einzige gesicherte Information zum Team. Alle weiteren Details kommen erst nach und nach.

Museums that don’t wait for an exhibition year

The Fridericianum opened in 1779, one of the first public art museums in Europe. For a time it even served as a parliament building. Since 1955 it has become the centre of documenta every five years. In between, it stays open. Since 1988 it has worked as a Kunsthalle, showing contemporary art even in the years without the big show. That makes the Fridericianum considerably older than documenta, which first used it in 1955.

A few minutes‘ walk away, on Schöne Aussicht overlooking the Karlsaue, stands the Neue Galerie. The building reopened in 1976 as the shared home of the city and state collections. Since 2019 it has held a permanent exhibition, about: documenta, a walk through every edition so far. The documenta Archive, in the Kulturbahnhof, goes deeper still. Arnold Bode founded it in 1961. Since then it has collected texts, photographs and documents on every single edition. It also holds a specialist library on classical modernism and contemporary art. For research purposes, the archive is open to the public.

A forest and a man who stayed

On 16 March 1982, Joseph Beuys planted the first of his 7000 oaks in front of the Fridericianum’s entrance. Each tree stood next to a basalt column. The planting took five years, until 1987. The last oak went in after his death, right beside the first one on Friedrichsplatz. What began as an art project that met resistance grew into a forest. Today it simply belongs to the city. The oaks stand scattered across Kassel. Their basalt columns have become a quiet way to recognise it.

Something similar happened with the Himmelsstürmer, literally the „sky-stormer“. Jonathan Borofsky created the figure in 1992 for documenta IX. A steel tube 25 metres long, tilted at an angle of 63 degrees. At the top, a man in a violet T-shirt strides towards the sky. After the exhibition, Kassel did not want to let it go. Donations from residents paid for it. Today it stands in front of the main railway station. Step outside the door at the Golden Tulip Kassel Hotel Reiss, and you look straight up at him.

Countdown to documenta 16

Naomi Beckwith has taken over as artistic director of documenta 16. The exhibition runs from 12 June to 19 September 2027, just over a hundred days. From today, that is roughly eight months away. Which artists will take part is not yet known. Neither are the venues. Beckwith is working with a core team of four further curators. That is the only confirmed detail about the team so far. Everything else will come piece by piece.
